Why I AM in this Fight

I am in this fight because my life depends on it. I am 82 years old, home‑bound, living alone, and surviving on Social Security. I depend on Medicare for the care that keeps me stable and alive. When home health is present, I stabilize. When it is withdrawn, I crash. That pattern is not theory. It is my lived reality.

I am in this fight because the system that is supposed to protect older Americans instead harmed me. GRH is a multi‑million‑dollar institution with lawyers, administrators, and financial incentives. I am one older Medicare patient with no institutional power. They have influence. I have consequences. Their decisions are paperwork. Their decisions for me are survival.

I am in this fight because Kepro mailed me a letter postmarked July 13 with a deadline of June 30 — a deadline I could not possibly meet. I am in this fight because MAXIMUS told me they would allow my appeal, and then told GRH the very same day that my appeal was rejected. Neither company practiced truth as a business model. Neither asked for evidence. Neither reviewed my pattern. Neither contacted me. They made decisions about my life without ever speaking to me.

I am in this fight because getting the medical care you need is about power. GRH has it. Kepro has it. MAXIMUS has it. Older Medicare patients do not. We are expected to accept whatever happens to us. We are expected to be silent. We are expected to disappear inside the system. It is hard for the old to stand up for themselves, and the system counts on that.

I am in this fight because this is not a paycheck for me. I am not paid to be here. I am not an employee, a contractor, or a reviewer. I am the patient. I am the one who lived the harm. I am the one who survived the consequences. I am the one who knows the truth from the inside.

I am in this fight because I am one of you. I am the reader. I live what millions of older Americans live. And if I do not speak, the truth remains hidden. CHHAS exists for one reason: to make the hidden visible. Us!
